Animal cruelty for fashion and beauty

As a fashion and beauty snob I like to use the best products for me.

But Im also an animal -lover, and I have had my fair share of pets from baby-hood to now.

and also as a muslim I feel its my duty to do my best to not inflict pain on any other living being as the meaning of the word 'islam' itself means peace, and it saddens me to see how the media portrays billions of people as blood thirsty vampires.

So I feel very sad to know that cosmetic and fashion companys carry out very cruel procedures on live animals.

I also try not to wear animal furs and leathers where possible as I know for a fact that animals are often skinned alive for their furs -luckily I never wear fur!

But -I also have to admit to a designer handbag and shoe fetish!

When I bought my Leather Prada bag I was promised by the guy in the Prada store that Prada do not treat the animals in a cruel way and that they purchase naturally-dead animals
-I do not know how true this is but I purchased the very expensive bag in good faith!

I know that testing on animals for medication purposes is important in the medical industry as it is the only way to find cures and treatments for human and animals both alike.

You would be amazed at the ingredients derived from animals also
from horse urine, to dead sea animal skeletons, to beetle blood, to insect poo, animal fats, hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone the list goes on forever

to be very honest things that we use in our day to day life can be considered cruel
Milk-this is the cows food for her calf
Eggs-these can be the chickens future baby chicks
Honey-this is made by the bees for the bees

Did you know that Animal testing was made illegal many years ago in the UK (about 1998 in the runnings of tony blair in the house of commons) but due to a recent change or addition in legislation many companys have snuck in animal testing apparently this piece of legislation is so big and so complex that even the very large cosmetic companys do not completely understand it.

So I am compiling a list of Cosmetic Companies that do not test their products on Animals and also companies that are Animal friendly

Animal friendly vs not tested on animals
Because there are thousands of ingredients that have been tested on animals. Companys can use these ingredients and display a 'not tested on animals' sign on their products this only means that the whole product has not been tested but the individual ingredients have been tested previously on an animal.

True Animal friendly
It is very difficult for a company to register itself as being truely animal friendly.
If any company has its products Animal friendly approved they are permitted to display a rabbit symbol on their products

If you know of any companies that are animal friendly or not tested on animals then please do a good thing and add their names in the comments below

1) The Body Shop (Animal friendly, Fair trade, also raise money for various charities)

2) E.L.F www.eyeslipsface.co.uk (Do not test on animals)

3) Liz Earle (Approved Animal friendly and uses naturally active ingredients)

4) BarryM (do not test on animals)

5) Co-op own brand cosmetics (do check the packaging as co-op has recently bought somerfields)

6) Marks and Spencers own brand cosmetics (animal friendly) they also do reasonable quality affordable makeup brush sets you may wish to check out.

7) Beauty without Cruelty (Animal friendly)

8) Bio-D (animal friendly)

9) Dermalogica (animal friendly)

10) Earth friendly ( Animal friendly)

11) Faith in nature (animal friendly)

12) Kingfisher (animal friendly)

13) Meadowsweet (animal friendly)

14) Moor spa (animal friendly)

15) Morrisons own brand products (Animal friendly)

16) Neals Yard remedies (animal friendly, natural products)

17) Organic Makeup (animal friendly)

18) Lush (not tested on animals, fairtrade)

As long as you are not very faint-hearted and you want to learn more you can read a book I read a few years ago called -'skinny bitch' Its a very interesting book (although I cant guarantee how true the facts are)

A great website is www.animalfreezone.co.uk
I partcularly found the page www.animalfreezone.co.uk/animalfreecosmetics.html very interesting.

I will definitely update this particular post regularly for you if you let me know whether this interest you or not, I'd love to know your thoughts!

Review: Estee Lauder Idealist dual action refinishing treatment

Estee lauder Idealist dual action refinishing treatment 75ml £35

As a huge fan of Estee Lauders Idealist range specifically, I was tempted to try this product when it was launched a few years back and here is my review:-

This is an all in 1 microdermabrasion at home kit.
But do not use this product lightly it is an actual glycolic peel and has a high level of active ingredients.
It is often described as a mask but I would call it an exfoliator.

Definitely read the instructions and follow carefully as this is a very strong and potent product.

When you use this you feel it heat on the skin instantly.
Honestly it feels like you put a hot solution on your face!

With my super sensitive dry skin I would only use this for the shortest time before an important event.

This product is great to refresh your complexion it exfoliates and brightens your skin and over time works on fine lines and wrinkles for a younger appearance although its hard for me to prove this as Im quite young myself-lol.

I have not repurchased this item and would not recommend it to anyone with very sensitive skin.

REVIEW:Clarins Beauty repair concentrate

Ive said a million times that I am The-dry-skin-diva and my skin suffers from extreme sensitivity I get horrible burning and redness, dry patches and flakiness neither comfortable nor pretty.

But over the years, through research, trial and error I have managed to teach myself beauty.

One of the brands I love is yet another prestigeous french brand -Clarins.
(other high end favourite brands include Gatineau, Decleor, Lancome, and even high street Loreal.)

Now onto the product-

Clarins Beauty Repair concentrate
I first came across this product 10 years ago when I was having my first baby - this product has been around for a very long time.

Its about £37 for 15ml
its used as a serum therefore the first product on your face. It is quite an oily texture (like a Decleor aromessence) but you just need a teeny tiny pump which is the size of a drop.

you can either use it dabbed on to problem areas or like me I sometimes leave this on as a mask for intense treatment, I prefer to dab it on key dry patches during the day under makeup and reapplying during the day as necessary and then leave it on as a mask all over my face (avoiding eye area) overnight to get maximum useage for my money!

Clarins Description -
A nectar of gentleness, a concentrate of nature: Lavender, Marjoram, Licorice, Mint, Soy, Avocadoà miraculous comfort for skin that cannot tolerate anything else. An "SOS" treatment for highly sensitive skin. It immediately calms irritated skin, decongests and reduces a red appearance. Its ultrasoothing formula contains 90% plant extracts to help restore weakened tissues, nourish and soften skin.

Apply at any time of day as an "emergency" treatment or as a time-specific, intensive treatment every 10-20 days. Apply 3-5 drops to thoroughly cleansed face and neck. Avoid the eye contour area.

  • Suitable for Sensitive skin types
  • Price per 100ml: £240.00
Ill post more product reviews from this and my other favourite brands soon

I hope you found this helpful

FOTD:- Lancome pink punk and black

Pictures of products from the actual Lancome website

This is a good representation of actual shades! (above)

This is a limited edition Quad palette by Lancome
from their Fab pink punk and black collection
that I absolutely love
the above pic of the palette does not do it justice
colours in the palette are
The lightest white pink
baby pink
and a rose pink that can be used as a blush and tapped onto lips for a colour under a gloss
and a black with silver glitter -OMG this is really purdy!

there were other fab products to go with quad
but due to my huge makeup collection I did not buy these
but I had to have the quad !!!

Lipsticks I recommend to go with this quad
Punk chick pink no 316 (softer pink)
Color fever lasting colour lipstick in Rock icon fuschia no 318 (brighter pink)

and any of the deeper brighter shimery lipglosses from the permanent line
such as Color fever gloss in dangerously pink 321
or
Laque Fever gloss in Lancome rose in 302

Here I am using the quad on my eyes but I have black pencil liner and I have used the black shadow to set the pencil lines on upper and lower lash line.

I also like to use this quad with 2 products from the Hello kitty collection by MAC

MAC Hello kitty blush in tippy
MAC Hello kitty lipstick in Strayin

I have used these in the above picture
Pictures were taken indoors in the evening so colours are not showing as vibrant as they are

I am wearing all 4 shadows from the quad with a slight hint of the rose colour on lips and cheeks
and the black glittery shadow is smoked out on both upper and lower lash line

Did you buy anything from this collection?

REVIEW: Bobbi browns new Natural finish long lasting foundation

Information/description and picture from Bobbi brown :-
Oil-free, all-day wear so you’ll have soft-matte, even-looking skin without having to pile on powder throughout the day. Made with sponge-like powders absorb excess oil on the surface of the skin, while emollients lock in moisture to ensure skin remains perfectly balanced. Transfer-resistant formula helps create a barrier against heat and humidity for 8 hours of wear. Even in the most humid climates, makeup stays in place. And like all of Bobbi’s foundations, the shades are yellow-based for a natural look. Perfect for oily and normal/combination skin. Available in 16 Shades.

I have dry skin so this is not suitable for me so I only tested this for a few days
I definitely recommend this to anyone with normal to oily skin
the oilyer the better
this stuff really adheres to your face even without a primer
if you have very oily skin use over a hydrating serum or a gel moisturiser
I put this on early and it lasted until really late
one layer will give you medium coverage
it is a thicker texture and dries fast
it is matte enough to not need additional powder

I hope this helps you if you were interested in this foundation

Alice in wonderland ltd ed palette by urban decay

This is my first Urban decay book of shadows.
Simply because I have so much makeup but I did not want to miss out on this one.

Its a collaboration between disney and Urban decay.
16 amazing colours, 2 eyeliners including the famous 'zero' black and a mini Urban decay primer potion.
If you already have any of the book of shadows you may want to give this a miss as they are all similar-ish in the colour content, unless of course you are a collector and you want back ups.
I placed my order for my Alice in wonderland book of shadows the day it launched because I definitely did not want to miss out and be left thinking should-of could-of would-of!

the pic above was from google, as Im feeling a little lazy but I promise to give you actual pics and looks using this.

BTw Im sad that Ive not had the chance to watch the movie yet but Im hoping to see it soon, Im also considering getting the alice in wonderland collection from OPI.

have you seen the movie or bought any of the Alice in wonderland products?

My top 3 favourite tinted moisturisers

Swatched really thickly for you to be able to see the colours as Tinted Moisturisers are semi-sheer

bobbi brown pot rouge

I love Bobbi browns pot rouge because they are a quick easy to use multi-functional product.
it has a good pigment, yet is not sticky or greasy.
I find that fingertip application is best
just one dab on the apples of each cheek and then blend in
and similar fingertip application on the lips a dab on each lip and spread

This is definitely my fave colour in the whole of the bobbi brown pot rouge collection
Bobbi brown pot rouge in powder pink 6, its a pretty neutral pink.

Can you see the tiny little hands that are trying to steal my pot rouge?

MAC lipliner swatches

MAC spice lipliner has won alot of beauty awards and top beauty editors and makeup artists describe it as the only lipliner you will ever need.
I think its definitely a great place to start for lipliners in general or if you want to purchase something from MAC but dont know what to buy, definitely try this -you have my blessings.
It definitely suits all lip colours and skintones.
The best way to use it is as I have, outline your lips and fill in, then go over with your favourite lippy either lipstick or lipgloss.

Because im such a makeup junkie I also wanted :-
a neutral pink - sublime culture
a neutral brown/beige - creamola

dervish is a very pinky color that has slight 3d shine but little pigment
this is fab with lipglosses such as MAC dazzleglass especially colours like baby sparks
or any sheer lipgloss with shimmer such as benefit lipgloss in my people your people

a fantastic alternative for a neutral lipliner from the high street is no7 in nude -ive used it in previous fotd
again this is the only lipliner you need and you would use it as I have described use for MAC spice

which lipliners do you use?

Natural makeup look -revlon nude and buff

Natural makeup look using easily available makeup from the highstreet
available from Boots/superdrug etc

I love doing this look for everday
I mostly use high end makeup from counters
but I want to do looks for everyone using good quality makeup that is easily available
I actually purchased these products to do this look for you all.

Neutral buff look using high street products
Products used :-
Revlon colorstay foundation normal/dry skin in sand beige
Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow quad in the buff 06
Liquid eyeliner upper and lower lashline Loreal super liner in Carbon black
Black Pencil eyeliner lower lashline bourjois khol and contour in noir expert 01
Max factor black mascara in false lash effect
Revlon matte powder blush in barely buff 004
no7 lipliner in nude to outline and fill in lips
Revlon Colorstay mineral lipgloss in neverending nude 505

BTW/ FYI I applied the foundation all over my face with no separate concealers or primers for face eyes or lips I multi tasked the foundation for this and applied it with no7's Concealer brush which is huge as a concealer brush but makes a nice small sized foundation brush.

I always over-define my eyes if you do not need/want to do this then you can leave out the eyeliner all together or you can do a barely there super thin line along both upper and lower lashline

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge -My collection, a review and swatches.

Ive always had a special place for cream products, they're usually my goto in a rush, as a busy busy mum. And as a summer product. On...
